My top two shampoos for curly hair

After writing on how to shampoo your curls, I noticed I’ve never posted anything about what shampoo I use and like. Today’s the day – this post is about what I think are the best shampoo for curly hair.

I know many curlies wouldn’t ever use any kind of shampoo on their curls. I’ve also tried to completely stay away from shampoos and only wash my curls with conditioner, but it just didn’t work for my curls. After a while of only using conditioner I noticed my curls hanging down and it felt like they were dirty, meaning they felt «producty». If you’re like me and feel the urge to use a shampoo, I strongly suggest you to get a sulfate-free one.

I don’t have one favorite shampoo for curly hair, but I actually have two:

  • CurlJunkie Gentle Cleansing Shampoo: I’m currently using the above pictured shampoo on a regular basis and I like it a lot! It’s not too harsh on my curls and I can easily wash it out.
  • DevaCurl No-Poo: As many other curlies I started out on my curly hair journey by using DevaCurl products, which is also why I go the DevaCurl No-Poo I really liked using the No-Poo as my regular shampoo and I definitely need to get it again soon!

If your curls crave protein, you could already choose a protein-rich shampoo. But other than that and using a sulfate- and silicone-free shampoo I don’t think it’s critical which shampoo you’re deciding on – why not get the shampoo with the best scent?

I’ve been living the curly life for just over a year now and I’m loving reading your blog since recently discovering it! I’ve been 100% Deva curl products cause it’s the only one I have experience with and that my stylist really knows about so thanks for sharing the products you’re using!

      Hi Terri Ann

Thanks for your comment! When I decided to embrace my curls I also started out only using DevaCurl products and then changed some products. It’s great if their products work for your curls, why not keep on using them? Apparently you’re not supposed to change a winning team 😉 I think I’ll also need to get some of their products again, I actually really liked the AnGEL!

To me, using a sulfate shampoo = severe tangling + breakage. Trust me, I’ve learnt this lesson the hard way, to the point that I’ve had to snip out some knots that had gone beyond undoing. However, I do like to clarify monthly with a sulfate shampoo. I always follow this up with a deep treatment. Sulfates are up there with dry combing and brushing for us curlies.
