Styling curly hair is not only about the right techniques or the products you use, but also about the amount of each product you apply. Figuring out how much product to apply to curly hair can be quite difficult, which is why I thought I could share how much of each product I apply to my curls.
Before showing you how much product I apply to my curls, I would like to mention that there is no “right” amount of product, because the amount of product that is right for your curls greatly depends on the length and thickness of your curls. With this post, I can simply give you an idea for what works with my curls. Right now they’re this long (I want to cut them soon!):

The length of my curls at the moment
Shampoo
Currently, I’m using either the Deva Curl No Poo shampoo or the Gentle Cleansing Shampoo by Curl Junkie. As you can see in the following two pictures they have a totally different consistency.

I apply this amount of the DevaCurl No-Poo the the roots to wash my curls

I use about twice this amount of the Gentle Cleansing Shampoo to wash my curls
Conditioner/detangler
After having applied either one of the previous two shampoos, I detangle my curls with the Kinky Curly Knot Today. To detangle my curls as gently as possible, I use quite a lot of it:

I use about 3-4 times this amount to detangle my curls
Once my curls are detangled, I finish by conditioning my curls with the Mop Top Daily Conditioner:

This is the amount of conditioenr I apply to my curls after having detangled them
Whenever I refresh my curls on second days, I use just a little bit of the Curls Junkie Smoothing Assurance Lotion

This is the total amount I apply to refresh my curls on second days
Styler
Most of the time, I either use the Mop Top anti-frizz gel or the Kinky Curly Curling Custard to style my curls

I use about this much of the Curling Custard to style my curls

With this amount I style my curls with the Mop Top anti-frizz gel
Hopefully this post helps you to figure out how much product to apply to your curls!

Wow, that’s a lot of KCKT! Makes sense though. The more careful you are with detangling the less breakage you have and the less gel you need.

Hey there, love your blog. Could you please tell me what products you use in cold, winter weather when the hair gets really dry? Thank you!

Hi, try to keep your curls moisturized – I usually do so by applying more conditioner and by deep conditioning my curls more often: https://www.justcurly.com/all/winter-routine-shiny-curls/

I have a 2a hair i think and ive come across curly communities only very recently. for 26 years i have never knows how to tame my poofy front wavy hair. If that makes sense. My hair is only half wavy. only my front part forms waves and if i tie it that loo looses its wave and becomes poofy, my hair is not that porous and its not too dry either but it’s just so poofy. I waned to try the CG method but am too afraid that most of tehse products would be too heavy on my hair and weigh me down with greasy look,. Can u suggest anything? I was wondering if gels hardens hairs

Thanks, this is useful info that is hard to find! Do you use any of the spray revitalizers? I was wondering if you left them out since its hard to show a measurement, or if you dont use it. I use Mist-er right or Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk refresher spray.
