Are you experiencing some troubles with getting your parting line to be where you want it to? I certainly do, because if I part my wet curls after washing them I’m breaking up clumps and am thus creating unwanted frizz. If you know this problem, today’s “how to part curly hair” post should be great read.
In order to get my curls to build nice clumps I’m unable to rake through them as soon as I’ve rinsed the conditioner. Not raking also means I can’t part my curls after rinsing the conditioner.
So when is the right time to part your curls?
If you also need to work on getting your curls to clump properly, I strongly suggest you to create your part before you’ve even started to wash your curls: When they’re still dry!

My part before washing my curls: I want it to be a bit more to the left, so I’m creating a new parting line.

To create a new parting line I place my index finger on my scalp, right where I want the new parting line to be.

To part my curls, I then separate my curls to my index finger’s left and right .

That’s where I’d like my new part to be after washing my curls.
The above picture shows how my parting line isn’t perfectly straight, which I like because it adds some root volume to my curls.
Use the back of a comb (or a pen) to get a perfectly straight parting line
However, if you prefer to part your curls in a perfectly straight line, I suggest you to use the back of a comb or if you don’t own one (I don’t) you can also use any kind of pen (just make sure you don’t actually draw a line on your scalp with it):

Place the pen on your scalp where you want your parting line to be.

Then separate your curls to the pen’s right and left and you’ll have a perfectly straight parting line.
Wash and style your curls as you always d0!
Since I don’t mind having a parting line which is a bit messy, I just wash and blow-dry my curls as I always do and I don’t pay attention to my curls staying on the right side of the just created parting line. I even blow-dry upside down. I then finish with clipping my roots and that’s what my curls looked like afterwards:

The parting line is exactly where I wanted it to be, but it’s a bit messy.
My parting line is exactly where I wanted it to be, but always turns out a bit messy, because I don’t pay attention to it while washing and blow-drying. It’s a bit messy, because some curls from the right and the left side of my parting line build clumps. I don’t mind it, because you can only see it’s zig-zag form when looking a me from above (who is doing that?), but not when looking at me from the front. Plus it doesn’t only hide your parting line a bit, but it also creates more root volume:

You can’t see my parting line isn’t perfectly straight.
Getting a perfectly straight parting line is a bit more complicated
In case it’s really important to you to have a perfectly straight parting line you’ll have to be careful while washing and styling your curls. You’ll have to make sure no curls switch to the other side:
- comb your curls with the parting line in it’s place: put half of your curls on your right and the other half of the left side of your neck and then comb them in this position
- don’t plop, as this’ll destroy your parting line
- blow-dry your curls upright

Hi Sandra! I have very long, curly, middle-eastern/central asian hair, which tends to get frizzy. Ive found i have great curly clumps underneath the strands in front of my face, which become frizzy, seperated, wave like strands, almost like crushed curls. If i pin these strands back, my curls can be revealed ( to give you an idea of where they are located). How can i get rid of these strands which basically ruin the appearance of my curls 🙁 ?

That’s a tough question, as some strands always seem to behave a bit differently than the others.. ( I have these underneath my curls all the way in the back, which is why I don’t mind them). But to answer your questions: Have you tried my technique to fix frizzy spots? https://www.justcurly.com/curly-tips/how-to-fix-frizzy-spots-in-only-5-minutes/ This could really help you!

I noticed how similar our parts look. Have you always had such a bold, distinct part in your hair? I just really noticed mine, for whatever reason, in the last few months. I never looked at the top of my head before or worried about hair thinning because I have always had thick, curly hair. But I straightened it one day 5 or 6 months ago and really noticed my part when a photo was taken of me. It has made me so worried in the last few months! I was afraid that my hair was thinning, but our parts look almost identical.. so I’m just looking for some reassurance that your part has also always been that way? I definitely have less hair than I did when I was younger (I’m 25 now), but I seem to still have a lot of hair compared to the average person.
