How to Handle Curly Hair on Rainy Days

If you live in a place where there are quite a lot of rainy days each year, you certainly know the challenge of handling curly hair on such days. Whenever it rains there is a lot of humidity, causing curly hair to look extra-frizzy. The number one rule to fight frizz on rainy days is to keep you curls moisturized! This way they don’t need to get the moisture from outside (which is what causes them to be frizzy).

Now that is easily said, but can be quite a challenge. Therefore I would like to describe what I mean by keeping your curls moisturized:

  1. If you haven’t already done so: Stop using products which contain silicones and/or sulfates. This way your curls can better absorb and lock in the moisture provided by those products.
  2. Use more conditioner than you would on a sunny day. If using more doesn’t do the trick, try deep conditioning your curls or use a leave-in conditioner.
  3. Use a defining gel like the Mop Top anti-frizz gel or the Kinky Curly Curling Custard and make sure to use enough of it to keep that frizz away for a whole day.
  4. If your curls begin to look frizzy after a few hours, take along a bottle of leave-in conditioner and add a water-conditioner mix to your curls once or twice throughout the day to smooth down any unwanted frizz.
  5. Don’t be so hard on yourself (or your curls) – rock your curls also on a rainy day and accept that your curls will look a bit more frizzy and voluminous on rainy days.

Handling Curly Hair on a Rainy Day can be quite a challenge..

If all of the above tips don’t improve the frizz you’re trying to fight, try any kind of hairstyle with which the frizz doesn’t show 🙂

I’ve definitely learned to rock the frizz and volume I get on rainy days and not fight it so much haha 😀

Since I stopped using straighteners on my hair a few years ago I have been living in the middle east, where it hardly rains! (Although there are other curly hair challenges: desalinated water, sun, sand/dust and few curly hair products around). Right now I am in Europe for a few weeks and it hasn’t stopped raining, which I’m not really used to! Not to mention I forgot to bring my silk pillowcase with me, my old enemy frizz is back!! Haha.

Thank you so so so much!!!!!!!! I live in South Carolina, and let’s just say that I was this close to going insane from all the humidity and rain.

This is really good advice for my crazy curly hair. Especially liked the tip on a bottle of leave-in conditioner and a water-conditioner in the mix. I will try it on my curls once or twice tomorrow and will get back with a result Thank a lot Sandra.

Is TRESemmé Botaniques shampoo and condition okay to use? I’m finding it difficult to find products that have neither sulfates nor silicones.

Thanks for your great information. I’m a 50+ woman who’s hair has gone from from straight to extra wavy in the last year. (Hormones or lack there of?) I want to learn how to look professional and use my new waves!

    Thanks a bunch!
