Using phone cord hair ties in curly hair

After seeing phone cord hair ties almost everywhere lately, I figured I had to give them a try. I got some colorful ones at Accessorize (they’re sold out online, but you can get them anywhere else) and have been trying them the past few weeks. I was really excited about them, because I’ve heard they’re supposed to keep your curls’ pattern when used for a ponytail.

Before actually trying them I couldn’t imagine what they’d look like when used in curly hair. The following picture gives you a better idea of how they look in curly hair:

My curls tied back into a ponytail with a phone cord hair tie.

What you’re probably most interested in is if they really kept my curls’ pattern! Unfortunately, they didn’t.. I guess it’d have been too nice to be true! If I need to pull back my curls without destroying my curl’s pattern I’ll still have to pull them back this way.

Why I like phone cord hair ties

Nevertheless, I like phone cord hair ties because they’re not only a fun way put my curls into a ponytail, but also because:

  • they’re elastic and at the same time they keep my curls in the ponytail really well. Which is the solution to me wondering if I should wrap my hair ties around my ponytail twice or three times (usually twice doesn’t give my curls enough hold and three times gives me a headache)
  • they won’t cause breakage, as they don’t have any metal parts in them
  • until now I have not yet been able to break one of them (usually my hair ties only last for a few times)
What hairstyles they’re good for
  • ponytails
  • buns (they actually work great to keep all my curls in a bun!)

Other than not living up to my expectations about keeping my curls’ pattern, I really like them as an alternative to normal hair ties!

I love phone cord hair ties! I have 3A curly hair and I have my hair in a ponytail almost everyday. I have used them for about a year and wouldn’t use a normal hair tie anymore 🙂

I’ve never tried these but I bet they’d be great for a bun for my #A hair. I’ll have to give them a try.

I just invested in some invisibobbles because I felt having normal ties (even the ones without the metal) were getting annoying.

I got Type 3 mixed hair and this phone chord tie really doesn’t help for me 🙁 It gets a bit stuck when I pull it out and also takes some shedding with it. They look cool, but sadly for my hair they don’t seem to do anything. Maybe using them when my hair is dry from the morning is the reason I’m experiencing this, but in the past I’ve experienced them doing this even when my hair is styled – I’ll have to try it again a few more times..

I’m yet to find the perfect hair tie that can 1. take weight off my head when tied back 2. hold my hair in place when doing a higher ponytail/bun 3. does not yank or dent hair

Please, please, please let me know when you find that kind of hair tie – I’m still on the hunt 🙂
