Meet Christina – a beautiful curly who sometimes also straightens her curls

… and still has gorgeous curls! If you’re interested in learning how she manages to still have such beautiful curls,  read the whole interview below.

In today’s article I’d like you to meet Christina, who is blogging at Hair Romance, where she’s sharing lots of useful tips. I have been following her blog for a long time and really love her hairstyles (they also work with curly hair)! If you want to know more about her (and her curls) you can also watch her videos on YouTube, follow her on Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest.

Have you always liked your curly hair?

One of the hairstyles that also work perfectly with curly hair

It’s been a journey to love my curly hair. I started out with straight hair and it changed to become curly when I was a teenager. I didn’t understand what was happening and I kept brushing my hair and treating it like it was still straight. I had terrible hair as a teen! It was only as I was finishing school that I met my friend and hairdresser Rohan, who helped me understand my curls. I met my husband Jim in the same street that I met Rohan and that’s where the name Hair Romance came from. I love my curls now, although I still love trying lots of styles which I share on my blog.

What tip, method or technique has really changed the appearance of your curls for the better?

Aren’t her curls beautiful?

I feel like I learn new things about my curls every year, and my curls change too. At first, learning how to use a diffuser totally changed my curls and gave me a super quick hair routine. Lately, I’ve fallen in love with using gel in my hair. It’s my secret to frizz free curls but you have to remember to scrunch out the crunch. I always hated gel because it made my hair feel crispy but I wasn’t waiting to do that second step which makes all the difference.

Do you straighten your hair most of the time or do you leave it curly more often?

At the moment I probably only straighten my hair 2-3 times a month. I used to wear my hair straight about half the time but lately I’m wearing it curly more and more. It really depends on what I’m shooting for the blog and what products I’m testing too. I’m a bit of a professional guinea pig with my hair for the blog!

How do you ensure that your curls stay healthy when straightening them? (your curls always look flawless and healthy!)

Thank you! I owe it all to deep conditioning treatments. I’m obsessed with them! When I straighten my hair I always use a heat protectant too. It really depends on your curls as to how they react to straightening. My curls are better when I never straighten them but I can get away with wearing my hair straight once or twice a month without too many issues.

What is your favorite hairstyle for curly hair?

Curls and braids – a perfect match

I love wearing braids in my curly hair. My favorite style is the high crown braid and I wear this a lot. I also love Dutch braids as they stand out so well in curly hair. You can really play up your natural texture in these braids.

What do you think is most important when it comes to curls?

Every curl is different and it takes time to find your perfect curl routine. I wish there was a shortcut but I haven’t found it yet. One thing that’s true for all curls is that they need moisture. Curly hair is naturally drier than other hair types and loves conditioner. Whatever your curl type, wear your hair out more often! I love seeing curly girls embracing their hair.

Hi! I have a curly hair and find it hard to manage. I can’t find the right conditioning product to use. I used this product for too long now but nothing happens. how can I soften my curly hair?? should I try hair-treatment products once in a while? everyone finds my hair beautiful but I’m not convinced. I hope you could help me out. Thank you.

You’re hair looks very similar to mine (on a good hair day). I too had straight hair that turned curly during my teens. In the winter it falls straight, in the humidity and summer… very curly. What’s your hair routine and what products do you use?
