Curly hair traveling guide: What products to pack

By 3comments No tags Permalink 1

Hi curlies, if you’re following me on Instagram you already know that I’ve been traveling quite a bit in the past two weeks. First, we spent one week in Italy (Lake Como) and then we went on a last-minute trip to Barcelona. I figured that I’m certainly not the only one who loves traveling, which is why I put together a curly hair traveling guide. This will be the first of three post on this topic (it would be too much information to put into only one post!) talking about what products to pack when traveling.

What products to pack when traveling greatly depends on how long will be traveling:

City trip: 3-4 days

My second day curls in Barcelona

When going abroad for a city trip (usually for about 3-4 days) I recommend you to pack the following products:

  • 1 shampoo
  • 1 conditioner
  • 1 styler

This should definitely be enough! With these products you can wash your curls at least once and refresh them on a second day by adding a water-conditioner-mix to your curls or you can revive them with your styler. I don’t recommend you to pack a deep conditioner for such a short trip. To be able to do so, I suggest you to deep condition your curls either the traveling day itself or one day earlier.

Traveling for 1 week

The first picture shows what products I packed for my one week trip to Italy:

  • 1 styler
  • 1 shampoo
  • 1 conditioner
  • 1 detangler
  • 1 hair oil

Especially when you go swimming (in the pool, the lake or the sea) during your vacation, I suggest you to bring along a detangler to help you comb your curls.  This you doesn’t only speed up detangling, but also reduces its pain and your hair loss while combing. I also packed the Darshana hair oil, which might seem a bit too much. However, I really like to use it in times when my curls are exposed to a lot of possible damage (e.g. chloride, the sun). Plus I only packed a small bottle – as you see, I can always justify bringing along an additional product 😉

During our vacation in Italy we rented a boat to explore Lake Como

Traveling for 2 weeks or more

When traveling for a longer period of time, I also suggest you to take along one additional product. So I’d pack the following:

  • 1 styler
  • 1 shampoo
  • 1 conditioner
  • 1 detangler
  • 1 hair oil
  • 1 deep conditioner

To make sure your curls look good on all that pictures you’re taking while traveling, I suggest you to also pack a deep conditioner to be able to properly condition your curls while you’re traveling.

In the next post on my traveling guide for curly hair I’ll be covering how you can get your curls to look great on your pictures by talking about different traveling hairstyles!

Great advice! I have another suggestion too– before you leave for your trip, check the weather at your destination. If your destination is much more humid or more dry than your home, you might want to select your hair products to suit the conditions. I just made the mistake of traveling to a very humid location with glycerin-laden hair products, and had to combat a lot of frizz.
